Trailer Time: Jack Ryan: Shadow One & Escape Plan

The timing is pretty crummy for this first Jack Ryan: Shadow One trailer to hit so close to author Tom Clancy’s recent passing, but it’s still nice to celebrate the man’s work which had been so influential. This first trailer from the Year One type film stars Chris Pine, Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner and Kenneth Branagh who also stars as the bad guy. The film opens on December 25th.

Escape Plan, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, now has TV spots that seem to be playing in fairly regular rotation. Better yet, they do a pretty solid job of explaining the film in greater detail than we’d seen previously. This one bows on October 18th.

Stallone & Schwarzenegger Throw Down In Escape Plan

Director Mikael Håfström (1402, The Rite) has a pretty interesting project in Escape Plan. Not only does the film sport a fairly high concept — a prison designer gets locked up in a super-high-tech prison he designed — but it also stars Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. As you can see in the clip above, two of the most titanic presences in action history beat on each other at least once in the film. Collider posted that clip as well as the following images which mostly feature Stallone, with Schwarzenegger only in one. We threw in the film’s poster as well because we haven’t shown it off before yet.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Escape Plan follows Ray Breslin (Stallone) who is the world’s foremost authority on structural security. He’s analyzed every high security prison and has gained a vast array of survival skills. But all Ray’s ingenuity and knowledge are about to be put to work in the most challenging test he’s ever faced: escaping from the master prison of his own design.

Schwarzenegger, in the role of Church, plays a complex inmate with multiple shades of grey. He’s the guy who fights to keep the prisoners from losing their humanity in their darkest hour as they struggle together to stay alive.

Escape Plan bows on October 18th.

Thor: The Dark World Director In Talks For Terminator 5

Part of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to acting includes many a return to his previous roles. In addition to Legend Of Conan, he’s also working on a fifth Terminator movie which he is said to star in. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Game Of Thrones and Thor: The Dark World is in talks to helm the film.

Back in June, Schwarzenegger talked to TheArnoldFans.com about his involvement in the project saying, “In fact, I’m very happy that the studios want me to be in Terminator 5 and to star AS the Terminator, which we start shooting in January and I’m also going to do King Conan – to play that role and also to do another Twins movie. So I feel very proud of that. I feel very happy and I’m looking forward to doing those films.”

Later that month an official press release went out saying that the film, simply referred to as Terminator, would actually be the first part of a “stand-alone trilogy.” While the script and story details are still being worked out, there have been rumors posted on WWE Examiner that claim the screenwriters are potentially thinking of building the story around Schwarzenegger going up against Dwayne Johnson. Here’s what they wrote:

A source close to the project says one idea being considered for the film could throw fans of the Terminator franchise for a loop. According to the scenario outlined, T5 may be a prequel set in the days of Sarah Connor’s parents, marking the first time terminators have been sent back in time to kill a character that existed before both John and Sarah Connor.

Incredibly, Schwarzenegger may not play the role of a machine in the next film, but a potentially heroic human figure in or close to the Connor family. One theory is that Schwarzenegger’s remarkable ability to protect the Connor family in the 1940s or 1950s with antiquated weaponry by today’s standards ultimately inspired the machines to develop a terminator in his likeness that was eventually sent to 1984 when Sarah Connor was first targeted for termination.

Again, that’s all hearsay at this point, but with the search for a director in full swing, it sounds like it won’t be too long until we have a better idea of what Terminator 5 will look like.

LIONSGATE AND MILLENNIUM FILMS COMMENCE

PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY ON ‘THE EXPENDABLES 3

Lionsgate Will Distribute Action Thriller on August 15, 2014 in North America and the UK

SANTA MONICA, CA (August 19, 2013) – Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF) and Millennium Films will begin principal photography today on THE EXPENDABLES 3, the third installment of THE EXPENDABLES action-thriller franchise, with production shooting on location in Bulgaria and at Nu Boyana Studios in Sofia.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 will feature Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to their roles in the first two films with Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford joining the all-star cast along with Kellan Lutz, MMA star Ronda Rousey, welterweight boxing champion Victor Ortiz and Glen Powell.

Patrick Hughes (RED HILL) will direct the film, with veteran Dan Bradley (The BOURNE franchise; MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, QUANTUM OF SOLACE) directing the second unit.  THE EXPENDABLES 3 is written by Creighton Rothenberger & Katrin Benedikt, who previously teamed on OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN, and Sylvester Stallone. Avi Lerner, Kevin King-Templeton, Danny Lerner and Les Weldon are producing THE EXPENDABLES 3.  Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson and John Thompson are executive producing. Lionsgate will release THE EXPENDABLES 3 in North America and the UK on August 15, 2014.

In THE EXPENDABLES 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables — but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

The production will be overseen by Lionsgate’s Jason Constantine and Eda Kowan.

The first two installments of THE EXPENDABLES have grossed nearly $600 million in combined global box office.

It’s cool to finally have a story for the second sequel in the franchise. Note that a few names have been left out of the release like Jackie Chan, Nic Cage, Milla Jovovich and Mickey Rourke. It’s possible those roles just couldn’t be worked out or that they’re being held in reserve for a later announcement.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Says “We Gotta Make A Good Conan

conan arnold schwarzeneggerMuch like his pal, co-star and one-time business partner Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger is returning to many of the roles that made him famous several decades after the fact. In addition to a new Terminator film that’s in the works, the former governor is also looking to reprise his role as Conan in The Legend Of Conan.

Frederik Malmberg, the CEO of Paradox Entertainment went over to The Arnold Fans and fielded some questions about the project covering everything from Arnold’s role to potential directors.

After explaining that the Fast & Furious team is working on the film he said, “It’s just in the phase where it takes a lot of work to get the script just right … We have a great story. Everyone loves it. This is a role that’s perfect for him and he’s very involved with the whole Universal team. It’s the best team they have. Arnold has been very instrumental to being this together saying, ‘We gotta make a good Conan!’ I think if we do this right, we can do two more Conan movies right after. I think Game of Thrones also shows a huge interest in fantasy. I’m psyched about it.”

Malmberg continued by saying they’re focusing on the story — making sure it’s not cheesy or “too much of a throwback” — before talking story details. “The idea is that this takes place AFTER Conan has been king,” Malmberg said. “But this is the legend of Conan where he has been gone and people say, ‘Do you remember the good ol’ days when Conan was around?’ And now it’s time for him to come back. In the stories and you can also see it when he’s sitting on the thrown and the narration on that last scene of the movie…’with a troubled brow’ …you can tell he’s not really happy being king. So, it’s time for him to go out and do battle … The idea for this particular film is that he will be the lead, a lot of people ask if we’re going to introduce a son of Conan and passing the torch? The idea is to not. No, this is Conan’s movie. This is Arnold’s movie!”

It sounds to us like everyone involved wants to make something good. The Last Stand was surprisingly good, so we know Schwarzenegger still has his chops, even if that film was more “shoot ’em up” than “sword and sandals.” Still, we’re looking at this one  with cautious optimism for the time being.

Who would you like to see direct The Legend Of Conan? We’d like to see Neill Marshall (Centurion, Doomsday, Game Of Thrones) get in on some Conan action. He’s shown he can do this kind of movie, but we’d love to see what he can do with one of the biggest names in action.
