Trailer Time: Jack Ryan: Shadow One & Escape Plan

The timing is pretty crummy for this first Jack Ryan: Shadow One trailer to hit so close to author Tom Clancy’s recent passing, but it’s still nice to celebrate the man’s work which had been so influential. This first trailer from the Year One type film stars Chris Pine, Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner and Kenneth Branagh who also stars as the bad guy. The film opens on December 25th.

Escape Plan, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, now has TV spots that seem to be playing in fairly regular rotation. Better yet, they do a pretty solid job of explaining the film in greater detail than we’d seen previously. This one bows on October 18th.

Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. S1E2 “0-8-4”

agents of shield castAs it turned out, last week’s premiere of Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC was the kind of show where the bloom fell off the rose as the week went on. The more opinions we read and heard, the more we realized that the episode was a bit dull and probably wouldn’t have hooked nearly as large an audience as it did had it been presented as a completely original show. But, a generally likable cast and the intriguing tease of an O-8-4  were interesting enough to bring us back for me. As you can imagine, SPOILERS follow.

Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. S1E1 “Pilot”

marvel's agents of shield castAs everyone knowns by now, Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuted on ABC last night at the 8:00 PM spot. We here at Explosions Are Rad don’t cover too much in the way of comic book news because plenty of other sites do it incredibly well, but there aren’t too many shows out there that fall into the action vein. We were stoked to see a new comic book-based show on the air and figured we’d give it a watch and then give you, gentle reader, a few paragraphs of our thoughts. SPOILERS FOLLOW.

On the other side of the comic book movie side of the fence, Warner Bros. unleashed their The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector’s Edition [Blu-ray] which includes Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises as well as plenty of previously unseen special features.

What are the odds that two Explosions Are Rad favorites not only have straight to video movies debuting on the same day, but also feature the same word in both titles? Apparently pretty good as Jason Statham’s latest Redemption (also known as Hummingbird in the UK) dropped today…

As did Dolph Lundgren’s clunkily titled Blood of Redemption. This one also stars Billie Zane and sometimes-Statham collaborator Vinnie Jones. So many connections!dollman blu-ray

Dollman starring Tim Thomerson and directed by Albert Pyun (Cyborg) isn’t exactly a lost classic, but we’d definitely be interested in checking out the recently released Blu-ray from Full Moon.Movies 4 You - Timeless Military Film Collection

Finally, Jeff Bridges opened up a bit about the failure of R.I.P.D., one of Universal’s few flops in recent memory. “I had such a great time working on that movie,” Bridges said. “I remember what we were doing. I thought: This could be fun to see. And when I saw it, I was a little underwhelmed. For my mind, the studio made some, uh, choices that I wouldn’t have made.” [via GQ]

Universal Denies Rumors Of Matt Damon & Paul Greengrass Re-Teaming For Bourne Sequel

Film Title: The Bourne UltimatumIf you were hoping that Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass would re-team for the fifth Bourne movie, Universal’s got some news for you: not happening. After TwitchFilm reported that the Bourne Identity, Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum duo were in talks with Universal to return to the franchise, the studio came right out and told Variety that there’s “no truth” to the rumor.

Sounds like a pretty done deal then, right? Well, Twitch updated their original post with “we remain very confident in our sources.”

The fifth Bourne film, which doesn’t yet have an official title, is being written by Sherlock Holmes’ Anthony Peckham and presumably focuses on Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross character as introduced in The Bourne Legacy.

Sylvester Stallone “Will Not Portray” Rambo In TV Series

rambo first blood part 2 Well, that didn’t take long to clear up. Just a few days ago, Entertainment One and Nu Image announced that they’re working on a Rambo TV series that film star Sylvester Stallone could possibly appear in. But now The Hollywood Reporter got exclusive word from Stallone’s people who said he will not appear on the show.

“While a television series based on the Rambo property is in development with Entertainment One and Nu Image, contrary to reports, Sylvester Stallone will certainly not reprise his role as the iconic John Rambo for the small screen,” the PR rep said. They did note that the Academy Award winning actor/screenwriter might have a hand in the creative side of things.

How do you think they’re going to handle this one, gang? The original Rambo was a Vietnam vet who could never quite fit back into society, so what will the deal be with the new version? They could go the period piece-route and keep the same basic premise or update the character as a veteran who served in Iraq or Afghanistan. Also, will they just reset the whole thing or make the new character a relative of John Rambo a la the Shaft movie starring Sam Jackson? What would be your ultimate Rambo show?

Trailer Time: Blue Caprice & Mob City

In Blue Caprice, Isaiah Washington plays real life DC Betlway sniper John Allen Muhammad as he tries to pass on his craziness to Lee Boyd Malvo as played by Tequan Richmond. Joey Lauren Adams (Chasing Amy, Dazed & Confused) also stars. The intense thriller is set to premiere on September 13.

Meanwhile, we also got our first look at Frank Darabont’s Mob City from TNT. The new series is set in 50s LA and chronicles the battle between well meaning cops and the mobsters who overran the city during WWII.  Mob City, which has gone by a few different aliases by this point (say, what do you think they’re hiding?) premieres on December 4th.
