Finally, we lost two icons in the world of films and crime fiction this week. Elmore Leonard, whose adapted novels include Rum Punch (transformed into Jackie Brown by Quentin Tarantino) and Get Shorty, passed on August 20th at the age of 87. Legendary director Ted Post (Beneath The Planet Of The Apes, Magnum Force, Good Guys Wear Black) passed away on the same day at the age of 95. Our thoughts are with the families of these two incredibly prolific individuals.

Official Synopsis For Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie Revealed

Neill BlomkampNeill Blomkamp must be doing something right. After making a huge splash with the sci-fi flick District 9 in 2009, he got the go-ahead from Sony to make the futuristic common man versus high society Elysium. That film, which had a reported budget of $115 million, opened last weekend and has earned $44 million at this point. It’s not exactly a ringing success, but Sony seems to have faith in both the film’s eventual success and Blomkamp’s original sci-fi stories because the studio agreed to co-finance his next project, Chappie, along with MRC.

“Chappie tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes,” the press release states. Regular collaborator Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium) will offer his voice for the title robot while South African hip hop duo Die Antwoord — also known as Ninja and Yolandi Visser — will play the thieves. Blompkamp will direct the film based off a script he co-write with District 9 co-screenwriter Terri Tatchell.

It’s Matt Damon Versus Robots In The Latest Elysium Trailer

Neill Blomkamp blew us away with what he could do with a small budget and actors who aren’t super well known in District 9, . Now he’s got Elysium coming from Sony starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and William Fichtner. The film finds Damon’s character getting a cybernetic enhancement surgically grafted to his body in order to make his way to Elysium, the floating city where the rich live above the rank and file dregs of humanity. The recently revealed scene finds Damon in a firefight with one of Fichtner’s robots, which doesn’t end well for the ‘bot cop.  Just from this clip, it’s clear that Blomkamp hasn’t lost his touch for bringing the surreal to life on screen and making it look awesome.

Elysium opens Aug. 9.
